Shanghai Oxford and Cambridge Society co-hosted a presentation by Professor William James; Professor of Virology, Associate of the Oxford Stem Cell Institute on 27 August at Dulwich College Shanghai. Under the umbrella of the series of popular presentations known as Dulwich Talk, the Professor presented his findings and research largely focused on the AIDS virus, in particular HIV-1 and how it replicates and how smart nucleic acids can be developed to prevent this replication. Highly entertaining, the Professor brought to life a difficult topic and captured the audience's attention.

Prior to the presentation proper, the Professor hosted a 20-minute Q&A for the Dulwich students. With many eager and hopeful medical students in attendance, the questions revolved around reading medicine and biology at Oxford.

Professor James is the Vice-Chancellor (Planning and Resources) at University of Oxford. He is Professor of Virology, a Fellow of Brasenose College, and a Fellow of the Oxford Martin School. He was Associate Head of the Division of Medical Sciences, responsible for finance, physical capital, information and communication technology, from 2008 – 2011, has served as Head of the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology (2007 – 2008), Monsanto Senior Research Fellow of Exeter College (1989 – 1994), and Medical Tutor at both Brasenose and Magdalen Colleges (2001 – 2011, and 1997 – 2001, respectively).


Professor William James, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Virology at Oxford is visiting Shanghai. Heading a lab that is at the forefront of stem cell-based technologies, he will give a talk on 27 August about the latest advances that sheds light on the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s Disease and AIDS. This talk is sponsored by Dulwich College (Shanghai).
