"The Digital Age: The Demise of the Library and the Book?"
With the success of the internet as a means of communication, the transformation of millions of printed books into digital form by Google and others, and the emergence of the Kindle, iPad, and other e-readers, many people believe the death knell has sounded for books and libraries. Rather than extinction, libraries are experiencing an exciting renaissance. In the digital age, libraries and publishers are engaging in a creative exploration of the way they can best achieve their mission, adhering to traditional values, but interpreting them for the modern reader and scholar. The Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford, one of the world's premiere research libraries is undergoing a transformation of historic proportions, with major renovations, the construction of new buildings, and digital programmes supporting outreach to an ever-expanding audience of readers and visitors.
